The landlords of a popular Powys village pub that is well-known locally for its much-loved Sunday roasts has told customers that it will close at the end of this month.

Pubgoers shared their shock after Phil and Kath shared that The Unicorn Hotel in Caersws will shut its doors on Easter Sunday (March 31) – exactly six years since they took over the pub.

The pair said the decision to close had not been taken lightly, and blamed running costs “doubling, trebling and quadrupling” making it difficult to continue.

The news comes as the pub was put on the market last month with a price tag of £350,000 which the management confirmed that they had no plans to leave.

Gutted customers have already spoken out about the news, with one person saying the closure of The Unicorn was a “tragedy”.

One person posted on Facebook: “A very sad day for the village. What a great six years it’s been having worked alongside you all and having many a happy time there.

“Thank you, Phillip Edwards and Katherine Matthews for being great publicans and great friends. All the best, the village will miss you.”

Another said: “Such a shame after all your efforts and hard work. You have made the pub the heart of the village. Always a lovely welcoming feeling with fabulous food and lovely service. Looking forward to joining you at Easter.”

Punters will get to say farewell on Sunday, March 31, where there will be a live band and karaoke “for all you good singers out there”.

A full statement from the venue shared on social media said: “It is with deep regret that we are having to shut the doors here in The Unicorn on Easter Sunday night.

“Like everyone in the hospitality industry, we have been hit very hard by escalating costs e.g. heating, lighting, gas and soaring food costs and brewery costs. Many of them are doubling, trebling and quadrupling and the margin is no longer there.

“We feel this is the time for us to leave, sadly, and the decision has not been taken lightly. We are so sorry to all of our many wonderful and loyal customers who we will miss more than anything.

“If you have any vouchers please come and use them.
