At least eight fire crews have been dealing with what appears to be a significant blaze at a Powys border business.

A number of crews have attended the fire at SJ Roberts Construction at Marton, close to the Wales-England border near Forden, on Wednesday evening (March 6).

They were called at about 6.30pm, with crews attending from as far away as Telford and using breathing apparatus, hoses, and aerial platforms to deal with what looked to be large plumes of smoke emanating from the business.

One eyewitness said shortly after 10pm: "There are fire engines at the front and the back of the building with a huge plume of smoke from the top, and a cherry picker overhead.

"Every time water is poured in you can hear it steam and crackle up.

"They seem to have tackled it from every direction but it still looks like it's some time before it'll be out."

OTHER NEWS:

He added: "You can hear some horrible noises, but it's hard to tell whether it's from the cherry picker or inside the building.

"The Lowfield Inn next door doesn't look like it's been asked to evacuate, so it doesn't look like it's spread from the main building at the front.

"At the back though, there's probably four units built end to end and it's hard to tell how far the fire has affected it."

The nearby road, the B4826, remained open while crews tackled the blaze, with engines and ladder platforms being parked in the car park beside the building.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Services's Incident Command Unit joined crews mobilised from Bishop's Castle, Clun, Minsterley, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Telford in attending the scene, with work continuing to tackle the flames as of about 10.30pm.
