I WAS disappointed to read your feature on a meeting in Staylittle last week to air concerns around the proposed Esgair Galed wind turbine development (Powys community split over turbines double height of Big Ben – County Times, January 22).

I was at that meeting and virtually all who spoke were adamantly opposed to this appalling proposal.

When Jasmin George read out the statement you refer to, spontaneous clapping broke out round the hall. It suits Bute very well to represent this as ‘differing views in the community’ but that is far from the true picture.

OTHER NEWS:

We heard from people who were born here, people who’ve lived here all their lives and people who have moved and made their homes and lives here - and the only ones who spoke in favour of the proposal were a very small number from, or supporters of, a family who have already bought into the scheme.

We are not just in a climate emergency, we are in a biodiversity and nature emergency. We are in the middle of the sixth mass extinction. It is madness to destroy nature to ‘save’ nature.

Or is it rather to save our wasteful consumer lifestyles and profligate use of energy? We should be treasuring our few remaining wild and beautiful natural spaces, not just for ourselves but for our children and grandchildren.

To quote Jasmin George: “Save wild Wales from industrialisation and big business, whose schemes would devastate the land forever. Just say ‘no’ to the developers. Save the ancient beauty and wildlife of Wales.”
