A documentary series following a newly formed rugby team helmed by Scott Quinell, partly cast from and shot in Welshpool, will be on S4C from tonight.

In the new series, Stryd i’r Sgrym (Street to Scrum), which is scheduled to premiere on S4C on Tuesday, January 30, at 9pm, viewers will follow a team of rugby players recruited from across Wales together by Welsh rugby legend Scott Quinell, made up of members of the public of all ages and abilities.

In October 2023, the series held a casting day at Welshpool Rugby Club and returned to the town to film the six part series. Welshpool served as one of the bases for the show, which included a pivotal match against Oswestry Rugby Club for a mixed friendly, a 20-minute match as part of the new team’s training schedule.

Stryd i’r Sgrym will be the first television series to focus on about T1 rugby, a new format of rugby  for people of all abilities, a non-contact game that still includes characteristics of rugby such as scrums and lineouts.

Scott Quinnell is reportedly very passionate about helping people have the confidence to play, and the opportunity to work together as a team:

He said: "Because I can't play anymore, I'm not part of a team every week. And I miss being part of a team, but now they are my team."

OTHER NEWS:

Part of the training team with Scott is Ken Owens, former captain of the Welsh men's team, Alex Jones, one of the Welsh Rugby Union coaches, Siwan Lilicrap, former captain of the Welsh women's team and Billy McBryde, who plays for the Doncaster Knights.

During the game against Oswestry in Welshpool, Lynne Davies Thomas, producer and director of Stryd i’r Sgrym, said: “The team is made up of people from all over Wales, a mixed team of different ages and abilities. Our youngest player is 21 years old and out oldest is 66. But I have to say they have bonded tremendously.

“It didn’t take long for them to connect either. They got on really well from the start and really look after one another. There’s plenty of strong characters on the team but they gel really well as a unit. The whole process has gone better than I could have hoped.

“As a leader and coach Scott has been absolutely fabulous to work with. You can tell he really cares for each and every one of these players. He’s always checking in to see how they are doing and making sure they feel supported in looking for ways to improve.”
