A flood warning put in place this morning (Friday, December 29) for the River Severn has been lifted after the heavy rain in the aftermath of Storm Gerrit.

The warning that flooding was expected and properties could flood had been issued at 7.30am by Natural Resources Wales for the River Severn from Pool Quay to Rhyd-esgyn, including Tirymynach, Rhyd-esgyn Lane and Trederwen Lane.

They are warning that, as of the early hours of this morning that river levels at Buttington were 4.9 metres and that “a peak level between 4.9 and 5.1 metres is possible this morning”.

The flood warning was later lifted shortly after 9.30am.

The river level at Llandrinio was 6.4 metres and that a peak level between 6.4 and 6.6 metres is possible this morning.

Natural Resources Wales added that the A483 at The Moors Straight, north of Welshpool could be affected by the high water levels.

For those travelling into Shropshire there could also be disruption as a flood warning remains in place on the River Vyrnwy in Melverley.

The Environment Agency warned: “River levels are high but steady at the Llanymynech river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall.

“Consequently, flooding is expected to continue. We expect flooding to affect properties and roads in and around Melverley including Melverley to Melverley Green and Ponthen to Melverley roads.”

Llanymynech peaked at 4.3 metres early yesterday morning and had slowly dropped to 3.9 metres as of this morning. Whilst levels at Crew Green are expected to peak somewhere between 6 metres to 6.2metres this morning.

They added that “further rain is forecast, and we expect river levels to remain high for the next few days”.
