Welshpool’s Banking Hub is set to open before the end of 2023, bringing cash services and face to face banking back to the town’s high street.
The shared hub will officially open its doors on Friday, December 15, filling the gap left by HSBC, Barclays and Lloyds Bank, bringing banking services back to the Powys town for the first time since Lloyds closed in January 2023.
The facility, run by LINK and Cash Access UK who are responsible for the UK’s ATM network and access to cash services, will aim to bring to provide town residents with access to over the counter banking services at the former Lloyds Bank building in Broad Street.

A spokesperson for Cash Access UK said: “After the successful launch in Prestatyn this week, we are excited to open Wales’s second Banking Hub in Welshpool next week.
“It’s so important that we keep essential access to cash in place for local residents and businesses.”
The Welshpool Banking Hub was first announced in August 2022 for a proposed summer 2023 opening. This would have made it the first bank hub of its kind in Wales. However, the project was delays by several months due to issues with finding a permanent location.
It will be the second banking hub of its kind to open in Wales, after a facility in Prestatyn opened on Thursday (December 7), with the Welshpool hub still being the first of its kind in Powys.
Banking hub timetable (9am-5pm)
- Monday: Lloyds
- Tuesday: NatWest
- Wednesday: HSBC
- Thursday: Santander
- Friday: Barclays
Following the initial announcement in 2022, Montgomeryshire politicians praised the development.
MP Craig Williams said: “This is fantastic news for Welshpool and the surrounding areas, as it will be the first time all the major banks will have a presence within the town.
“The facility will bring banking back to the High Street and support those who are reliant on access to cash.”
Russell George, MS for Montgomeryshire, added: “This is welcome news and a positive step forward in bringing vital cash and banking services back to the local community and I am pleased that one of Wales’ first banking hubs will be placed in Welshpool.”
Community bankers within the hub will work on rotation, with a different bank or building society available on each day of the week, open between 9am and 5pm, with Lloyds, NatWest, HSBC, Santander and Barclays all available on certain days.
