A north Powys primary school has been granted permission to build an extension that will add an extra classroom to the school.
Powys County Council has approved a planning application submitted by Ysgol Glantwymyn, located between Machynlleth and Llanbrynmair, to add a new classroom, WC and a covered veranda as well as extra space.
The proposed single-storey development will result in more teachers being employed by the rural school, according to a delegated report within the application. An additional two parking spaces will be included to accommodate the increase.
The 11.6 metre by 15 metre extension will be sited over an area currently used as a playground, however Ysgol Glantwymyn is reportedly confident that they have sufficient external play areas to support the loss of this space.
The application was first submitted in July, undergoing numerous consultations with Hafren Dyfrdwy, Welsh Water, Powys Highways Authority and the ward council to gain full approval on December 4.
In their consultee comment, Powys Highways authority recommended that the school submit a revised drawing detailing the location of and number of additional parking bays to facilitate additional staff.
They stated they would not object to the application provided that it met certain conditions, saying: “Prior to the first beneficial use of the development, provision shall be made within the curtilage of the application site for parking and turning areas for vehicles in accordance with details to be submitted to and approved in writing by the Local Planning Authority beforehand.”
Powys Environmental Protection offered a comment on the recommended schedule for when construction on the extension should take place, given the school’s proximity to residential areas.
They said: “Whilst I have no objection to the proposal itself I do note that it will be a major construction project in a residential area I would therefore suggest that the following condition be attached to any consent granted.
“All works and ancillary operations which are audible at the site boundary shall be carried out only between the following hours.”
Powys Environmental Protection recommended that building work should only be carried out from 8am to 6pm on Mondays to Fridays, between 8am and 1pm on Saturdays and at no time on Sundays or bank holidays.
Environmental Protection added that deliveries to and from the site, as well as removal of plant, equipment, machinery and waste from the site, must also only take place within the permitted hours.
