Powys County Council says it has begun work to improve standards in a kitchen at one of the county’s primary schools after a poor food hygiene report.

Arddleen Primary School near Llanymynech received just a two out of five in its latest food hygiene report after a number of issues surrounding the structural condition of the kitchen.

In a food hygiene report made earlier this year they noted the foods standards agency noted “the altro floor covering in the kitchen which coves up the wall was in poor condition.

“The coving had peeled away from the wall surface in numerous areas in the main kitchen, storerooms and WC room.”

They also found “paint to several areas of the kitchen wall was damaged, with loose paint left on the walls” and that “the insect screen to the rear kitchen door was damaged” which could have allowed in pests

The also noted that “the coving issue has been brought up twice before and it was not resolved” which lowered the overall score.

The upkeep of kitchens is a responsibility of the local authority and Powys County who have said work to improve the kitchen began in the summer holidays

Councilllor Jake Berriman, Cabinet Member for a Connected Powys, said: “Although the recent food hygiene inspection of the Arddleen Primary School kitchen found that the standards for hygienic food handling were very good and the standards for the management of food safety was generally satisfactory, the inspection identified issues around the structural condition of the kitchen that required improvement.

“Improvement works to the school kitchen were due to take place earlier this year but were postponed until the summer holidays. The works are now nearing completion and will be finished in time for the start of the new academic year.

“Once complete, we’re confident that they will address the issues identified in the inspection report and that the school kitchen will obtain a higher food hygiene inspection following a re-visit.”
