Bring your basketball, cricket bat or football and have some fun at the new multi-use games area which officially opened at a Newtown playpark this week.

Also known as a MUGA, it is open for everyone to play a variety of different sports and games in a yellow and blue caged area built on an area that was the town centre play park for many years before the new Severn Play Park was opened.

Work started on the project in May but after much anticipation, the ribbon was cut and the MUGA officially opened by deputy mayor Councillor Mike Childs, Councillor Val Howard and Councillor Lee Menzel alongside local children on Tuesday, August 1.

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, which has spent just under £52,000 on the project, said the idea for an “exciting” play area stemmed from feedback by residents and visitors adding that it will promote active lifestyles and “fostering a sense of togetherness for many years to come”.

“Thanks to Open Newtown, the National Lottery and the town council, the whole area has been transformed.  A great new play park, a toddler area, the wonderful Hafan yr Afon building, model train storage, cycle storage, improved river access, chill out area and now the MUGA.
