GROUPS in Presteigne are being urged to come forward and help save the annual bonfire and fireworks display, after it was announced that the usual organisers are unable to put it on this year.

The bonfire and fireworks display is a highlight in the town’s annual calendar and involved a giant wooden hen going up in flamers last November.

The annual winter spectacular is held on Went’s Meadow and is usually organised by arts and entertainment group, Sheep Music.

However, they are unable to do so this year, so Presteigne and Norton Town Council is encouraging other local groups to get involved.

“November bonfire and fireworks on Went's Meadow, Presteigne: Unfortunately, Sheep Music, which normally organises and runs the annual event on the meadow is unable to do so this year,” the council said in a post on its Facebook page on Monday (July 31).

“If any community group is interested in running this event please get in touch with any councillor or the clerk for an initial chat. The event is independent from the council and your group would need its own event insurance etc, but profits would, of course, belong to the group.”

Presteigne mayor and local county councillor, Beverley Baynham, said: “It would be such a shame if we are unable to run the community firework display this year.

“If anyone is interested please do contact the clerk or myself to discuss what we can do by working together.”
