Powys MPs have welcomed the news that residents in the county are set to get an increase to their pension payments.
The new Pension Credit is a top up will be worth an extra £3,500 a year. Under the scheme, pensioners in Montgomeryshire who are currently receiving Housing Benefit will receive a letter encouraging them to apply for Pension Credit, as part of the Conservative Government’s campaign to reach those who could benefit but have not yet applied.
MP For Montgomeryshire, Craig Williams welcomed the new UK Government pilot within Powys which is designed to boost the take up of Pension Credit, as part of wider support with the cost of living.

“The UK Government recognises the challenges pensioners will be facing with the cost of living, which is why, alongside driving down inflation, promoting Pension Credit is a top priority,” said Mr Williams.
“It is great that this pilot is being run within Powys, encouraging pensioners across Montgomeryshire who may be eligible for an extra £3,500 a year of support through Pension Credit to apply.

“This will make a big difference to many residents, so I would urge everyone to look into whether they or their loved ones are eligible.”
The UK Government is calling on pensioners “to check if they are entitled to Pension Credit as soon as possible, to ensure they are receiving all the support they are entitled to.”
As well as a cash top up to the State Pension, the new scheme will help those who are eligible access other support such as help with housing costs, council tax reduction schemes, heating bills and a free over-75s TV License.
MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, Fay Jones also welcomed the news and said her office would be willing to help anyone who needed assistance in the process
"We know that many pensioners have not yet applied for Pension Credit, meaning they are missing out on vital support which could help relieve some of those financial pressures we are all currently experiencing," said Ms Jones.
"This announcement is an example of the Government taking much-needed action in order to relieve those financial pressures facing many today"
