A community group in Powys have received funding from Hafren Dyfrdwy as part of the company’s community project initiative.

The fund allows non-profit organisations to apply for grants of up to £10,000 to support new projects for the community and this year funding has been awarded to the Friends of Ysgol Meifod, who applied for a grant to create an outdoor hub for the community.

A spokesperson from Ysgol Meifod said: “We’re honoured to have been awarded a Community Fund grant. This support will give us the opportunity to create a space which will allow multiple social groups within our village to benefit.

"Our project creates inclusion, independence, and friendship, by providing an outdoor place to meet, and promote our beautiful village.

“In addition, living in a flood plain we are often cut off from other villages and towns due to this, so having somewhere local to go and relax outdoors with the family is a welcome addition.

"By creating an organic space to grow flowers/vegetables, encourage bee’s, butterflies, and birds we can become more sustainable, encourage community ownership and lead by example in looking after our wonderful planet.”

Friends of Ysgol Meifod volunteer group provide facilities, experiences, and support for the local school.  It is hoped the new outdoor hub will provide a place for the whole community to enjoy, to encourage social activity, promote wellbeing, improve mental health, and provide a meeting place to learn new skills, such as gardening.

James Jesic, Managing Director of Hafren Dyfrdwy, added: “This past year, we’ve been fortunate enough to provide financial support to several projects across Powys. Another of these is Guilsfield Tennis Club, an inclusive sports club run by volunteers. Their grant has been used for club benches, to encourage more people to come along and not just play, but also interact socially, strengthening ties across the community.

We’re really pleased to be part of this incredible work and able to provide the support they need through our Community Fund.”
