Dyfed Powys police have paid tribute to a "respected officer" who died in a crash in Powys.

The death of Inspector Gareth Earp near rhayader has led to tributes pouring from the community after the community learned of the tragedy today.

Dyfed Powys Police have now confirmed that he sadly paseed away after an accident near Rhayader yesterday evening (June 29).

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: "We are saddened to confirm the passing of one of our officers following a road traffic collision in Powys yesterday afternoon.

"Inspector Gareth Earp, who was travelling home from work, died at the scene following a two-car collision on the A470 between Llangurig and Rhayader at approximately 4.50pm.

"Inspector Earp was a well-liked and respected officer, having served with the force for 21 years.

"He leaves behind wife, Tamsin, and three sons Ethan, Theo and Joel, who remain in the thoughts of everyone at the force."

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said they were called to the scene of the accident and the other driver also received emergency medical care. 

They said: “We were called at 4.54pm to reports of a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on the A470 between Llangurig Roundabout and Rhayader.

“We sent three emergency ambulances to the scene, where crews were also supported by a high acuity response unit paramedic, an ambulance officer, a duty operations manager and Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service colleagues.

“One patient was taken to the University Hospital of Wales.”

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed the other driver remains in hospital and confirmed that "the collision, involving a black VW Golf and a black Range Rover Sport, is now being investigated."
