A medical officer, commonwealth games organiser and housekeeper for a historic hall are among the Powys residents on the King’s birthday honours list.

On June 16, the first honours list of King Charles III tenure on the throne was unveiled.

The honours list consists of knights and dames, appointments to the Order of the British Empire and gallantry awards to servicemen and women, and civilians.

Among the recipients was Val Hawkins, chief executive of Machynlleth-based MWT Cymru (Mid Wales Tourism), from Newtown, received the MBE for her service to tourism and the economy of Wales.

Christopher Jenkins, a Chief Executive Officer for the Commonwealth Games was was included on the list for services to the Commonwealth Games and sports in Wales. Mr Jenkins, from Crickhowell, receives the OBE.

Professor Christopher Jones a Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the Welsh Government was honoured with a CBE for services to healthcare.

Also honoured was a housekeeper eighteenth century Llanfyllin landmark, Bryngwyn Hall, as Christine Horton was included in the list with a BEM for services to heritage and charity in Wales.

The hall is regularly used for fayres and community events, with Ms Horton, who lives in Llansantffraid, being responsible for the upkeep of the historic building’s interior. she has held the role for 40 years.

Meanwhile, Sally Johnson who founded the Harry Johnson Trust in memory of her son Harry, from Vennington near Halfway House in Shropshire, was awarded the BEM. John Bate, from Aberdyfi in Gwynedd, was given the MBE for services to the Talyllyn Railway.

She said: “I am surprised but delighted to have been recognised with an MBE.

“I am proud of the work I have done as an officer of MWT Cymru over the past 24 years, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic when a lot of good people in the industry pulled together to try to mitigate the impact on tourism businesses through that extremely challenging time.

“Our strength lies in being a small but flexible and agile team which allows us to adapt quickly to changing circumstances.

“It has been a bit of a rollercoaster, with a new challenge around every corner.

"I am proud that we bring together businesses, local communities and national organisations here in Mid Wales which has helped to reinforce the position and reputation of MWT Cymru.”

Secretary of State for Wales David TC Davies said: “It is incredibly inspiring to hear about the extraordinary and invaluable work of so many people from across Wales who have deservedly been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours.

“Welsh recipients from a wide range of fields have been recognised, whether it’s for their commitment to their local community, their contribution to sport, education, culture or health – and I’m thrilled that their endeavours have been commended.

“I would like to congratulate all the recipients being honoured and thank each and every one for their contribution.”
