An army veteran whose death during a night out in Welshpool town centre prompted a police investigation died from accidental circumstances, an inquest has heard.

Marvin Lloyd Grange, 47, who lived in Welshpool, was found unresponsive on the junction between Berriew Street and Broad Street at around 1.30am on Sunday, January 30, 2022, after he had been out drinking at a nearby pub, The Angel.

CCTV footage of the area showed Marvin, who was known to drink to excess, was intoxicated when he accidentally fell leading to a "significant" blow to his head on a pavement.

The inquest heard earlier this month that although Marvin got up from the fall, within a few minutes he collapsed to the ground and became unresponsive.

Despite extensive medical efforts, Marvin's condition did not improve, and he died the next day on Monday, January 31, at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Concluding her findings, the coroner, Patricia Morgan, said Marvin died from a "severe traumatic" head injury as a result of an accident contributed by alcohol.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that nobody else was involved in the tragic accident.

Officers had issued an appeal for the public's help on the day that Marvin was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

What happens at an inquest and what can the press report?

Reporting on inquests is one of the most difficult jobs faced by any journalist, but there are important reasons why local newspapers attend coroner’s court hearings and report on proceedings.

Here we will try and answer some of your questions about what will happen, what can be reported and why.

Speaking three days after the appeal, Detective Sergeant Adam Clark said: “We had CCTV footage of the man leaving The Angel pub and walking down Berriew Street, however, the cameras did not capture the moment he fell.

“Following our appeal, a local shopkeeper provided CCTV footage that clearly shows there was no third-party involvement.

“We would like to thank those that came forward and allowed us to provide an explanation of what happened to the man’s family.”
