A truly inspiring young woman who has become a successful athlete after having her leg amputated during the war in Syria will share her experiences at a special event in Llanidloes this weekend.

Dima Aktaa was named by the BBC as among the 100 most inspiring and influential women in 2022 and this year she was awarded the Community Spirit award by Arab Women of the Year 2023.

Ten years ago, her home in Syria was bombed and she lost her and the ability to do one of her favourite things – run. Dima is living in the UK and is training to compete at the 2024 Paralympics.

After raising money for refugees during the pandemic, she was recognised as a member of England’s alternative football squad, the Lionhearts. Her story recently featured in pop star Anne-Marie’s music video Beautiful, and she was part of Sam Ryder’s Eurovision performance, and Dima continues to raise awareness of the strength of people with disabilities.

The event in Llanidloes has been organised by Seba, a prominent member of the Syrian community in Newtown.

A spokesperson for the event said: “We hope as many people as possible will come to hear Dima's story.

“There will be delicious Syrian food and hot and cold drinks.

“Entrance is free but there will be an opportunity to make charitable donations.”

Everyone is invited to hear her life story which will be shared at the Hanging Gardens, Bethel Street at 6pm on Saturday, May 27.
