THE first concert of the 2023 season at Llanwrtyd Wells Heritage and Arts Centre takes place this Saturday, May 13, when the venue welcomes Builth Wells Ladies Choir, performing with soloist Shain Lewis.
The choir was formed over 40 years ago and draws members from a wide, rural locality. Following two years of uncertainty due to the pandemic they returned to the stage last year.
They have performed at the Royal Albert Hall and taken part in various eisteddfodau, while they are heavily involved in fundraising and private events, often together with Builth Wells Male Voice Choir.
Their previous concert at the heritage centre in 2019 was a great success and once again the choir will be performing a varied programme in English and Welsh. The evening will include songs from musicals as well as more serious pieces.

The choir – like countless other community groups and clubs throughout Powys – was hit hard by not being able to meet throughout the pandemic, but members have slowly been finding their voices again over the last year.
They returned to their weekly practices at Builth’s Wesley Methodist Church last year and were back on stage in October, performing at Llanwrtyd Eisteddfod’s 70th anniversary.
“On a positive note we are glad to say that Builth Wells Ladies Choir are back on track and looking forward to the future with confidence,” wrote chorister Megan Jones in the choir’s newsletter last October.
“We should never underestimate the therapeutic power of music and choristers have found that singing together can boost your mood and make you feel good about yourself.
“If you are interested in music and are inspired to join our choir, please do not hesitate. There will be a warm welcome awaiting you and feel free either to speak to a choir member or turn up at the Wesley Methodist Centre on a Wednesday evening to either listen or join in.
“We are a friendly crowd and many strong friendships have been made through the choir over the years.”
