Preparations are well under way for this year’s Bishops Castle Round and About Walks which has been described by organisers as the “the best marked route by far we have ever been on”.
The 23-mile circular route between Bishop’s Castle and Clun, taking in Oakley Mynd, the Walcot Estate and Bury Ditches, along with bits of the Shropshire Way and Offa’s Dyke, will be divided into three-mile sections, allowing walkers to complete the whole route in one go between May 16 and 29 or spread it over two or three days, or choose which parts to sample.
Last year, the youngest walker was 14 and the oldest was 92.

Organisers say the walk’s first aim is for as many people as possible to enjoy walking and the scenery. The second aim is to support the two chosen charities, which are Blood Cancer UK and Friends of the Community College at Bishop’s Castle.
A spokesperson said: “A band of willing volunteers produce maps and signs and clear the route, which is marked thoroughly with arrows during the fortnight of the walk. Every other day, they replace those arrows which disappear into the wind or the stomachs of passing cows.”
People who are keen to take part in the walk can enter by paying £10, or £20 for a family of two adults and up to four children. Under 16s are free with an accompanying adult
