Iolo Williams will present the wonders of the Powys countryside to a national audience when a new programme goes out on the BBC next week.

The Montgomeryshire wildlife presenter's latest programme, Iolo's Borderlands, will air on BBC Wales on Monday, April 17, before going out to a UK-wide audience on BBC Two on Friday, April 21.

In it, he will explore the border area around north Radnorshire and in Montgomeryshire.

The third episode of the series will see Iolo visiting Dolfor near Newtown, and one of the last remaining strongholds in Wales of curlews, and will explain their unique follow-the-leader style mating game.

He then hears male linnets singing among the ancient landscapes of Kerry Ridgeway and Offa’s Dyke, before inspecting the orchids near Welshpool.

OTHER NEWS:

He ends this leg of his journey by discovering why the Montgomery canal is home to so many dragonflies.

One of the highlights of the programme sees Iolo encounter one of the fastest birds in the world - the peregrine falcon.

In the programme, Iolo says: “I always get a little bit of a thrill, because when I was a kid they were really rare, there were maybe six or seven in the whole of Wales and now they are far more widespread and you find nests scattered all along the Welsh marches.

"They’re fantastic, birds of prey that have got that attitude, almost like an arrogance, they know they’re cool. The peregrine is the coolest of all of them.”

Episode three of Iolo's Borderlands is on BBC One Wales at 8pm on Monday, April 17, and BBC Two at 7pm on Friday, April 21.
