Welshpool Town Council voted against spending money on a new link to the Mayor’s Chain to commemorate the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
At a meeting on February 22, Town Councillors rejected the notion of purchasing a gold plated commemorative link for a cost of £2,900.
Traditionally, the Mayor’s chain may contain links commemorating significant events on both a national and local level, for instance there is a link on the Welshpool Mayor’s chain commemorating the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.

The council decided it would be unreasonable to pay such a price for the commemoration given the current cost of living crisis and concerns over the town’s budget.
Cllr Phil Pritchard said: “I consider myself a royalist, but even I cannot ask this of the town’s residents after asking them to stomach an increase to the budget.”
Town mayor Alison Davies agreed, saying: “We felt it was important that this was discussed, as we know how we feel about town heritage but I know how we also feel about the budget, as well as how the town’s people feel about it.”
The council did agree that the Mayor’s Chain should be refurbished, cleaned and polished in the lead up to King Charles III coronation in May.
