Long-awaited resurfacing works at an accident hotspot near Welshpool will be starting next week with overnight road closures.

Cefn Bridge, between Trewern and Buttington, will be closed between 7pm and 6am over a two-week period, except on weekends, starting from Monday, February 20, and ending on Friday, March 3.

The resurfacing works will extend from the Trewern side of the bridge to the Ham’n’eggs junction. Work will also take place to resurface a “failed area” between The Green Dragon and Offa’s Dyke Business Park.

OTHER NEWS:

Motorists using this section of the A458, a popular route between mid Wales and the West Midlands, have been warned that there will “inevitably be some disruption”.

The diversion route for all other traffic will be via the A458 to Shrewsbury, A5 to Oswestry and A483 to Welshpool.

Amanda Jenner, county councillor for the Trewern and Trelystan ward, said: "I'm pleased to see this starting and although ultimately I would like a nice wide straightened up bridge, I realise that it is just a bit ambitious and probably idealistic!

“Myself, the community council and Russell George MS have been calling on the Welsh Government to improve safety here for some time and so I'm glad something is happening.

“This first works will be for an improved surface which will slow traffic and then later on there will be some small speed changes to reduce the variable speed limit along this stretch.”

The Trunk Road Agency said people living in properties along the length of the roadworks will be accommodated, as will emergency services and winter gritting vehicles.
