A public meeting is going to be held about improvements to the water system in a Powys town after multiple burst pipes.

Water company Hafren Dyfrdwy is inviting its customers to two community meetings, to hear all about its plans to improve the water network in Montgomery.

The company is planning to invest £800,000 to replace a stretch of the water network “to help provide the local community with a reliable water supply that’s fit for the future.”

The area has had issues with the pipes in the town with major bursts in recent – including 3 times in 2018.

The latest burst pipe led to Pool Road being closed in September, this drew criticism from Town Mayor Jill Kibble who said: “Timely maintenance could actually save so much in the costs of emergency work and disruption to business and life in the town.”

Hafren Dyfrdwy said it wants to meet with residents, and is hosting two community meetings ahead of work starting in May.

Cat Webb, Community Communications officer at Hafren Dyfrdwy said: “To make sure our customers living in the area have a reliable water supply for years to come, and to prevent that chances of pipes bursting, we need to make sure our network is in the best possible condition.

“So to do that, we’ll be replacing around one kilometre of pipe, starting on Station Road, where we’ll be replacing the older pipes with new ones so they can continue to supply our customers with water.

“Before we start working on this project, we’d love to meet with those living local to hear all about our plans and how we’ll be working in their community.”

Hafren Dyfrdwy will holding the meetings at Montgomery town hall on Thursday February 23 from 9am until 3pm and Tuesday March 14 at 5pm until 7.30pm.

“It would be great to meet as many local people as possible ahead of work starting, so they can fully understand the benefits this investment will bring, and let everyone know how we’ll be working in the area,” added Ms Webb.

“This work is expected to start in May and will expect to have everything completed by the end of the year, where the local community will be set to benefit from an up to date, reliable network that will serve them for years to come.”
