A WELSHPOOL man has had a hefty court fine for disobeying strict laws on travelling during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic reduced after he said he was not aware of any fine.
Rudoslaw Rosiuk, of Berriew Street, Welshpool, was stopped by police travelling along the A489 near Newtown in May 2020 with a friend.
It occurred during an emergency period where the general UK public were not allowed out of their homes for more than a maximum of one hour per day for exercise and were not allowed to be in the company of someone who was not from the same household.

Rosiuk and another man were stopped while travelling on the A489, Welshpool Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday, January 24. They were identified as not being from the same household.
In December 2020 Rosiuk failed to attend court and the matter was dealt with in the Pole’s absence. The court this week was told the defendant attended last week as a result of an arrest warrant issued for non-payment of fines and he was asked to return this week.
Rosiuk told the court he had no issue with having committed the offence, but he wanted to contest the large fine.
Speaking via an interpreter, he told the court: “I am prepared to pay a fine but I never received a letter informing me of the fine.”
The fine had been £660 but magistrates reduced this to £120. Rosiuk was also told to be £85 costs and a £34 surcharge.
