A MAN who raised concerns for his safety when he called the police ended up being arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Gareth Plunkett, 28, phoned police on November 2, last year after he had been drinking.

Officers were dispatched to the scene, in Glasbury, where Plunkett was eventually arrested – Llandrindod Wells Magistrates’ Court heard this week he continuously tried to walk into the road.

Plunkett, of Broad Street, Hay-on-Wye, did not attend the hearing on Wednesday, January 18, and was convicted of being drunk and disorderly in his absence. His case had been adjourned in December when he failed to attend.

Prosecutor Stephen Davies said the incident occurred on the B4350 road between Llanigon and Glasbury with Plunkett calling the police at around 11.30pm on November 2 before he was located a short time later.

Mr Davies said: “They located him in Glasbury outside (a pub). Officers formed the opinion he was drunk as he was unsteady on his feet. He said he had been drinking pints at the Harp Inn.

“He was seen lying on a wall, then he was stumbling into bushes and he tried walking into the road. This was a pattern throughout the encounter. He also made unfounded allegations against the police throughout.

“He then ran away from officers, who tried to reason with him. They were trying to ensure his safety. He then ran at the officers in their car as they were driving away and put his hands out; PC Greensmith had to brake hard to avoid a collision.

“He began sprinting up the road, wearing completely black clothes, so they decided they had to arrest him as he was acting disorderly.”

Mr Davies said Plunkett had no prior convictions, except for a caution for a similar matter.

Magistrates fined Plunkett £220 and ordered him to pay £300 costs. He also has to pay an £88 surcharge.
