SNOW and icy conditions in Powys on Tuesday have caused chaos, while flood alerts near Rhayader and Llanidloes have led to some children not being able to get to school.
The cold snap that came in yesterday is dominating road conditions and weather warnings this morning, but the A470 in Powys has been closed in both directions because of flooding.
This has led to one bus operator announcing that coaches servicing the school route between Rhayader, and the town’s remote surrounding areas, to Llanidloes High School, are not running today.
“Due to a further closure of the A470 between Llangurig and Rhayader the LD126 school buses from Rhayader and St Harmon will not run today, Tuesday 17th January,” Celtic Travel said in an announcement on its Facebook page this morning.
“We apologise for any inconvenience but this is out of our hands.”
Motorists have been warned of treacherous driving conditions throughout Powys today after temperatures plummeted in the last 24 hours.
A Met Office weather warning for snow and ice in parts of Wales is in place until noon Tuesday, with up to 10cm (4in) of snow expected in some areas.
Dyfed Powys Police said there were "treacherous road conditions" due to ice on the A488 between Bleddfa and Knighton.
Meanwhile, a jack-knifed bus closed the road – believed to be Weston Road – between Knighton and Bucknell on Monday evening after slipping on black ice.
On Tuesday morning, Dyfed Powys Police warned that the B4560 between Bwlch and Llangynidr, in south Powys, was in a bad state. “The road conditions are treacherous. Please be careful whilst driving or avoid the area if possible,” police tweeted.
Some schools have been shut in Wales due to icy conditions, with Denbighshire council reporting emergency closures of several schools. No schools have been closed in Powys thus far.
Despite the cold snap, the A470 is closed due to flooding. Traffic Wales reported this morning that the road is closed in both directions between Llangurig and Rhayader.
