MOTORISTS are being warned of treacherous driving conditions throughout Powys today after temperatures plummeted in the last 24 hours.

Rain and flooding were the issues last week in the county, but freezing conditions are now causing chaos on the roads.

A Met Office weather warning for snow and ice in parts of Wales is in place until noon Tuesday, with up to 10cm (4in) of snow expected in some areas.

Dyfed Powys Police said there were "treacherous road conditions" due to ice on the A488 between Bleddfa and Knighton.

Meanwhile, a jack-knifed bus closed the road – believed to be Weston Road – between Knighton and Bucknell on Monday evening after slipping on black ice.

Mandy Fowkes posted this picture of the Minsterley Motors bus on the Knighton News Facebook page, saying the bus had slid on black ice at around 5pm. It is believed the road was closed for around 3 hours before reopening.

On Tuesday morning, Dyfed Powys Police warned that the B4560 between Bwlch and Llangynidr, in south Powys, was in a bad state. “The road conditions are treacherous. Please be careful whilst driving or avoid the area if possible,” police tweeted.

Some schools have been shut in Wales due to icy conditions, with Denbighshire council reporting emergency closures of several schools. No schools have been closed in Powys thus far.

South Wales Police, meanwhile, has advised motorists to drive with care as many roads were "treacherous due to black ice".

Despite the cold snap, the A470 in Powys has been closed – due to flooding. Traffic Wales reported this morning that the road is closed in both directions between Llangurig and Rhayader due to flooding.
