TRIBUTES have been paid to a Builth Wells man who was known as “the face” of the town’s golf club.
John Saer, a past president, captain, handicap secretary and general stalwart of Builth Wells Golf Club, died on Saturday, January 7, after a long illness.
John was widely regarded as a legend at the golf club, while he was also a huge fan of Builth Wells Rugby Club, who he would often follow home and away.
Tributes have flooded in from both within Builth and beyond to John, including from neighbouring and rival golf clubs.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of past president, past captain, past handicap secretary and stalwart of Builth Wells Golf Club, Mr John Saer,” said the club in a post on its Facebook page.
“John was to many, the face of Builth Wells Golf Club for many, many years and he will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
“Those of you that were fortunate to have been in John’s company will remember fun, laughter and his half lager among other things. Our thoughts are with Sheila, Emyr, Sharon and families.”
“My heartfelt condolences from all of the Simcock family. I also send our condolences from members and staff of Llandrindod Wells Golf Club. He will be greatly missed by everyone,” said Wayne Simcock.
George Leadbitter, of Brecon Golf Club added: “On behalf of the committee and members of Brecon Golf Club, deepest condolences to John's family and friends. He was a true legend of the game.”
And Mike Evans, president of the Glamorgan County Golf Union, said: “John was always a welcome sight at Builth, and with Gwynfor and Martin whenever Glamorgan played Brecon and Radnor. Good character and a sad loss.”
Ryan Parker, a local who came through the junior ranks at Builth, said of John: “So sorry to hear this sad news.
“John was such a warm and funny man, I was always so pleased to speak with him when up at the golf club as a junior. He always had time for you and made you laugh, a massive loss, my condolences to the Saer family.”
Female member Enid Evans said: “So sad, John was a true legend who worked so hard for our club for many years. Many of us will miss the fun and laughter in his company. Cwsg mewn hedd John/ Rest in peace X.”
He will also be remembered across town at the rugby club, who released their own statement on Facebook, saying: “It is with great sadness to tell you all that John Saer has passed away.
“John was a huge Bulls supporter, home and away for many years. He loved the Bulls and will be sorely missed. Have a half for John today.
“Our thoughts are with John's family and friends today.”
