RADNOR YFC recently held two weekends of public speaking competitions, where Howey YFC proved that they can certainly talk the talk.

Sponsored by Milwyn, Jenkins & Jenkins and hosted by the Lion Royal, in Rhayader, the first competition was held on Saturday, November 5, with 12 teams competing in the junior reading competition, reading extracts from Lark, written by Anthony McGowan.

The winners of the junior reading trophy were Penybont YFC followed closely by Cantal YFC in second and Presteigne and Dolau YFC coming equal third. Other competitions on this day included situations vacant which was won by Sally Griffiths of Presteigne YFC. The annual junior and senior member of the year competition also took place, with Laura Bevan of Cantal YFC winning the junior member of the year and James Griffiths of Penybont YFC winning the senior member of the year.

The second weekend of competition started with the senior brainstrust, as teams from across the county entertained supporters with their lively debates on rural and current affairs. Clare James, Tori Davies, Geraint Mathias and Cerys Fairclough of Howey YFC took the overall winner’s trophy and Ben Chilman from Presteigne YFC won the much-coveted trophy for best speaker. Next day it was time for the juniors to show off their public speaking skills with Laura Bevan, Casey Rees and Sioned Harris of Cantal YFC clinching the title for the junior public speaking. The intermediate call my bluff was next up and Howey YFC once again came out on top with Cerys Fairclough, Tori Davies and Katie Hughson claiming top honours, while Tori also won the trophy for best speaker.

The overall trophy for the weekend was claimed by Howey with Penybont runners-up and Presteigne taking third place.

Radnor YFC also had a busy weekend with 8 members heading to the English Winter Fair, held at Staffordshire Showground, on Sunday, November 20, with members representing their county against other YFC members from across the UK, and they came back with some excellent results. Sam Beavan of Knighton YFC came second in the intermediate lamb carcass stock judging. Elizabeth Swancott and Jack Nixon also had fantastic results and came second as a team, judging the pork carcass competitions. The overall team of Elgan Davies, Thomas Swancott, Lauren Morris, Lauren Kinsey-Owen, Mark Nixon, Sam Beavan, Elizabeth Swancott and Jack Nixon finished sixth place overall.
