A HOST of stars from the Maldwyn Harriers Athletics Club stable have had a busy month.
A host of athletes descended on Gwent for the combined Welsh Inter-Schools / Inter-Regional Cross Country Championships the Monmouthshire Showground.
Llanymynech’s Deri McCluskey won the under 20s men’s race while Aled Breeze of Newtown was third in the under 17s’ boys’ race.
Maddie Hughes of Llanidloes ended third in the under 15s’ girls’ race while Welshpool’s MacKenzie McCourt just missed out on a medal, ending fourth in the same race.
The Newtown based club helped make up the North Wales team which won the overall team competition.
Many of the athletes also headed to Liverpool last weekend for another cross country event.
Hughes once again impressed and crossed the line in 22nd place from a field of 133 to seal her place as the club’s highest placed athlete in the competition.
The club continues to develop its own talent and earned itself a growing reputation as a conveyor belt of talent.
The current crop of young stars hail from across Montgomeryshire with students from Llanidloes, Llanfyllin, Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion high schools all regularly competing for the club across Wales and the UK.
The Newtown based club meets and trains regularly at the town’s Maldwyn Leisure Centre on Plantation Lane with further details on how to join their ranks available online.
