NEWTOWN Rugby Club continue to look to the future by investing in their junior section.

The Pool Road club’s thriving junior section caters for players from under seven level to under 16s with regular training and fixtures throughout the season.

A club spokesman said: “With the emphasis on fun in the early years, we are really seeing the benefit of this approach with numbers swelling week on week, supported by the provision of strategically positioned taster sessions during the season so that new players can try rugby in a more relaxed environment.

“We also continue to promote the club through engagement with local schools through our WRU Hub Officer.”

However Newtown Rugby Club took this opportunity to develop their plans for the future, including the construction of long needed new changing rooms at their Pool Road ground which they share with the town’s cricket and tennis clubs.

A club spokesman said: “We have seen return from investing energy into the section during COVID and were able to provide an offering as soon as guidance would allow, meaning we saw virtually no drop off in these younger ages.

“We also saw our young players on the road with a beach rugby session in Aberdyfi and a trip to Parc y Scarlets, playing at half time during the Scarlets v Stormers match to round off the season.”

The club’s under 12s section also took part in the Gwernyfed Festival and played established south Wales clubs.

The club hopes the investment and work on developing their youngsters will ensure many will progress through the junior teams and to the senior ranks.

The club currently competes in the second division of the Admiral National League Division Two North and habe endured a tough start to the season.

The spokesman added: “With this continued focus in our junior section, we are confident we can maintain a sustainable club through growing our player base and coaching expertise from within.”
