Welshpool’s Powis Castle has announced that it will be extending its opening hours for the Christmas season.

The doors to a festively decorated Powis Castle will remain open for visitors to enjoy the lit up castle until 7pm, starting on Saturday, December 3, until December 18.

The team at the castle have spent months planning and preparing for the festive season, offering visitors a unique Christmas themed experience when they visit the castle in December.

County Times: Christmas trees as tall as 16ft will decorate the castle's rooms.

Sarah Johnson, Visitor Operations and Experience Manager, said: “We started thinking about this Christmas display before Christmas last year was over, that’s how much thought and planning goes into our displays. This year’s is particularly special though as it takes direct inspiration from the collection that we’re so proud to care for.

“We’re keeping the castle, café and shop open until 7pm for a fortnight so everyone has a chance to see the decorations.

County Times: Each room has a specific theme to a country or era.

“The castle at night is truly spectacular and we hope these extended opening hours will encourage those who have been working or at school all day to do something different and get into the festive spirit.”

Festive lights will guide the way from the car park to the castle, where Christmas trees as tall as 16ft, decorated with thousands of lights and hundreds of baubles will decorate the medieval fortress.

Each room’s decorations have been designed to transport the visitor to a different part of the world or era gone by, from Italy and China to Tudor times and Greek mythology.
