Llanidloes’ humanist mayor says he will not bring the council into disrepute by refusing a chaplain.
The Town Council discussed a letter received from Cytun (Churches Together in Llanidloes) regarding the Mayor’s Chaplain.
“I have no religious affiliation, no faith and no need for a chaplain,” the Mayor Jamie Jones told the full council meeting last week.
“I believe religion has no place in government whatsoever.”

The traditional role of the chaplain is to offer spiritual, pastoral and moral support and guidance to the Mayor.
Mayor Jones, who describes himself as a humanist, told the council that he will respond in a polite manner and thank Cytun for their blessing.
He added: “I will do it tactfully and that it won’t bring the council into disrepute”.
