WELCOME to your weekend bygones as we transport readers back to the 19th century.
Once again we are so fortunate to share some of the John Thomas Collection and hope bringing these pictures to a wider audience more than a century after being taken will suitably honour the long past photographer.
We begin with the oldest picture in this week's collection with a group at Vaenor Park in Llanidloes taken in 1867. We do not know who the group was and it would be fair to see they do not seem the most cheerful - even by Victorian standards.
Next we head to Llanbrynmair bridge in around 1885 with locals and cows alike enjoying a day by the river. It certainly seems a simpler time. Was this a local custom in the village?
OTHER NEWS:
- Powys mansion on the open market for first time ever as owners dub it a 'financial burden'
- Powys man died after suffering severe reaction to wasp sting
- Woman who caused £15K damage in spree to be detained at psychiatric facility
We also share a picture of Machynlleth Town Clock taken in 1885. Remarkably little has changed in the century and a half since but you do see less top hats worn on the street these days.
This picture of Montgomery square in 1885 shows the town has changed little since though it seems dogs had rather more freedom to wander around in the 19th century.
Finally we share a picture of Meifod life in 1885. What a wonderful snapshot of Montgomeryshire life in the 19th century.
