A WELSHPOOL family has been left heartbroken after their beloved pet staffie was killed when she was hit by a car while out on a walk.

Bree, a 5-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, died instantly following the collision, which occurred early on Sunday morning, October 16, as she was being walked by her owner John Taylor in the Windmill Lane area of town.

Dyfed Powys Police has confirmed that they are investigating the dog’s death.

John says he and his family, including his wife, son, daughter and three grandchildren, have been left “devastated” by Bree’s death.

He has also criticised the driver of the vehicle involved, believed to be a red Suzuki, claiming it was speeding and failed to see that John was wearing a hi-visibility vest while Bree had a bright pink harness on, as well as being on a lead. He wants to use her death as a warning for people out walking their dogs.

“Bree was a the most gentle staffie ever born,” said John, who lives in Brynfa Park.

“My wife and I, my daughter, son and my three grandchildren are devastated that we have lost one of our own.

“There are no other words to describe how we are all feeling. Bree was five and has been with us since she was eight-weeks-old.”

OTHER NEWS:

The incident happened around 8.15am while John and Bree were out on one of their daily walks.

“The driver was definitely speeding, dangerously,” said John.

“The car just missed me but Bree was not so lucky and died instantly.

“The driver got out and I told them they were speeding and did not slow down even though I was wearing a hi visibility vest and Bree had a bright pink harness on with three lights.

“If you cannot see a person with high vis clothing on and Bree with lights there is a massive problem. The driver just drove off.

“Bree was behind me, walking down the lane. She was on a lead as we always do when we see a vehicle, other people or other animals. Bree was a very nervous pet. If she saw something different she would stop and wait for me to get her.”

Dyfed Powys Police said enquiries are ongoing. “Police are investigating a road traffic collision which occurred at about 8.45am on Sunday, October 16, on Windmill Lane, Welshpool,” the force said in a statement.

“Sadly, a dog died after being involved in a collision with a car. Enquiries into the incident continue.”
