A Newtown man has wowed passers by with his woodwork creations – including a life-sized Tardis he is now selling online.
Since his retirement, Geoffrey Parsons from just outside Newtown had created, from scratch, a variety of wonderful creations including the replica of the Tardis, a full-sized horse-drawn wagon and a set of stocks.
“Well I’ve always been good at DIY but not specifically building stuff like this. It was things like property repairs,” said Mr Parsons.
“I worked at Tesco, before that I had a tool company in the Midlands. I’ve never done woodwork as a job. It’s always just been a hobby. I’ve bought houses and I’ve done repair work on them, I’ve always been pretty handy but this is a whole new thing.”
He said he learned the skills to make his creations by “watching a video on YouTube – just join the Tardis owners club and you get all the plans”.
His first piece, the wagon was made just prior to his retirement and had always been something that he and his wife Jacqui had always wanted: “This was something I had always wanted and I thought I might as well just make one, I can do it - so I did.
“It’s my wife’s retreat as a bit of peace and quiet, you know.
“It was something she always wanted and we looked at a few and they needed a lot of work to repair them and they can be a real pain to repair.
“They all need repair work, fairly major work, to fix rotten bits on them. My wife asked can you fix it? I said I can but to be honest I’ve got to tear it apart to fix the bits it’s probably easier to start from scratch and make a new one.
“She said ‘Do you think you can do that?’ and I said yeah and that’s how it started – I just went ahead and made it.
“We brought the base which needed refurbishing and the axles needed widening but I can weld as well.

“It took us about two years because we could only work on it outside because it’s too big to go in the garage. We started on the base in the garage but once we had to put the top on we had to do that outside and you have to stop for the winter.”
This led on to other creations such as his stocks “again, I saw something on YouTube and thought I could make something out of them.”
These were before his latest creation of making a life size replica of the Tardis – which has had people come round to pose with it.
“We do get people stopping occasionally saying can we get a little photo with it,” said Mr Parsons.
“Quite a few people do that. It has sort of become a bit of a landmark as well, that and the gypsy wagon.”
Mr Parsons has now decided to sell the Tardis on and said he wants to “give it to somebody else who might want it” and is available for £1,500.
He also said that he is unlikely to build anything else in the near future and said “I’ve not got any plans for anything else at the moment, although my wife, Jacqui, is thinking about it.”
