THE case of a Powys man accused of several violent offences has been delayed by a week.
A plea and trial preparation hearing was due to be held in the case of Rhys Burgess today at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, but was adjourned.
Burgess, 30, from Brecon, stands accused of six charges in total. He is said to have intentionally strangled Natasha Morgan, unlawfully and maliciously wounded Terrence Morgan and caused unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, namely Roxy the dog, by picking her up and throwing the animal at a window.
Burgess allegedly stole a mobile phone and subjected Natasha Morgan to violence while doing so and is also said to have caused criminal damage to various items, including car wing mirrors, a mobile phone, fan, laptop, printer, desk, earphones, Perspex windows, internal doors and a lock mechanism belonging to Natasha Morgan. All five offences are alleged to have taken place in Brecon on September 2.
Additionally, Burgess is charged with engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour in relation to Ms Morgan between August 1, 2021, and March 31 this year.
He is said to have continuously engaged in behaviour which was controlling or coercive, including constantly texting and calling her, threatening to kill an animal, family or himself if the relationship ended, and controlling her friendships and places she frequented.
Burgess, of Coryton Close, Brecon, initially appeared at Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates' Court on September 5, where he was refused bail and remanded into custody.
Judge Richard Twomlow told Burgess today (October 3) he would reappear before him a week, on Monday, October 10. He was remanded into custody until that date.
