It has been announced today that Queen Elizabeth II will be buried with the Duke of Edinburgh in the King George VI Memorial Chapel in the grounds of St George’s Chapel

The burial will be a private service at 7.30pm on Monday evening (September 19), after her state funeral earlier in the day.

Due to this decision Prince Philip will be removed from the Royal Vault, where he was interred after his death in 2021, to join his wife of 73 years.

Some people may not know what the Royal Vault is and who is buried there, so here's the information on that subject.

What is the Royal Vault?

As reported by The Metro, it is a burial chamber located on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

It is beneath St George’s Chapel, which has been the chosen burial place for the Royal Family since the 15th century.

Constructed between 1804 and 1810 under the orders of King George III it has become traditional at royal funerals to have the coffin lowered into the vault through an opening in the floor of St George’s Chapel.

Who is buried in the Royal Vault?

Once Prince Philip is removed from the Royal Vault there will be 24 Royal Family members buried there.

These include King George III, IV and V, Prince William IV and Queen Charlotte.

The Metro reports that the first royal placed in the vault was Princess Amelia, the youngest daughter of King George III.

The last person buried there was Princess Alice, the mother of Prince Philip, in 1969, but her tomb was transferred to Jerusalem in later on.
