A Powys couple had to have an emergency birth in their car after their son made an unexpected arrival.

Welshpool couple Lucy McMellon and partner Alastair contacted Ford to let the carmaker know that about the run expected birth of their son, Ollie, in their Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Lucy went to bed on a cold evening in November 2021 experiencing relatively mild contractions and expecting plenty of time before the baby would arrive, given their first child, Emma, was born 15 days late.

But in the early hours it became clear that their next arrival would appear imminently, and during the journey to the hospital Ollie decided his moment had arrived.

“We got about 10 minutes down the road and I realised I needed to push,” said Lucy.

“Our midwife, James, told Alastair to find out where we were so he could inform the ambulance of our location.”

By the time Alastair had returned with help, Lucy had given birth to Ollie in the front passenger seat of the car, with both mother and baby in good health.

“Ollie literally started his life in that car," said Alastair.

"It was zero degrees outside so I just cranked the heating up and we drove home.

A spokesperson from Ford expressed their delight and surprise at the news.

“We were thrilled to hear the news of Ollie’s safe arrival and that our Ford family is growing all the time,” he said.

“We test all Ford vehicles to extremes, but even in this most unusual situation the Mustang Mach-E performed perfectly.”
