SEVERAL Mid Wales fire crews were called out to incidents across Pembrokeshire over the weekend – including a large-scale fire at an industrial estate.
Landrindod Wells Fire Station’s large 13W1 water carrier attended a massive blaze at the Waterston Industrial Estate in Milford Haven on Sunday, August 14, while also being called to help battle a wildfire at Newgale beach, near Haverfordwest, after a fire broke out on a hillside there – both calls meant a journey of over two hours and around 93 miles.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MWWFRS) said they had around 100 staff at the Milford Haven scene on Sunday night, as well as 14 appliances and specialist assets including a drone to help tactical officers tackling the blaze.
Dyfed Powys Police said a large storage unit had been destroyed by the Waterston fire, which broke out at about 2pm on Sunday and has spread to an adjacent waste recycling centre. The Llandrindod team was deployed to the Newgale fire just before 4pm.

“Stn 13 Llandod our water carrier 13W1 mobilised and now deployed at a wildfire in Newgale, Haverfordwest,” the station posted on its Facebook page.
In a tweet around 10pm, they said: “Night-fall over Newgale… still a nice orange glow. Could be a long night, long way from home.”
Craig Thomas, divisional commander for Ceredigion and Powys at the MWWFRS, said: “Huge thanks to all the crews from all parts of @mawwfire at fire in Milford Haven today, amazing support from local businesses who supplied endless drinks and food.
“Huge shout out to our control room who had multiple incidents ongoing. Tremendous work by everyone #thankyou.”
Chief Fire Officer Roger Thomas said approximately 20 appliances had been in attendance in the area tackling fires.
Crews were dealing with a large number of grass fires across Wales over the weekend. In Rhondda Cynon Taf, a serious fire closed the Rhigos Mountain Pass. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the mountain fire had melted fencing on the roadside, allowing boulders to fall onto the roadway.

In Montgomeryshire there was a fire near the main road between Welshpool and Montgomery.
On Sunday night, Llandrindod firefighters also responded to a barn fire in the Pant-y-dwr area, near Rhayader. “13P1 mobilised to reports of an agricultural building alight in the Pant-y-dwr area along with 07P1 from Llanidloes,” the station said in a post.
“On arrival crews found a quantity of hay bales in a field well alight. Crews extinguished using 1 hose reel jet and assistance from the farmer with a loader.”
It’s been a busy month for fire crews across Wales amidst several heat waves, which had led to a lot of inter-agency cooperation.
Llandrindod Fire Station posted on Friday that they had responded to 34 incidents in the last 12 days.
