ENGLAND'S European Championship triumph is a 'watershed moment' for the game.
Llanfyllin-raised Football Association of Wales (FAW) head of women's and girls football praised the Lionesses after their stunning victory over Germany in last weekend's final at Wembley.
She said: "This is a watershed moment for women’s football across Europe and we are already seeing the affect of the Euros here in Wales with us breaking our ticket sales record for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier on September 6 against Slovenia with over 5,500 tickets sold already including over 30 from Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng in Welshpool.
"Interest in girls wanting to play the game is also on the rise with parents from across Wales contacting us to sign their daughters up to a local Huddle centre of which there are 63 across Wales.
"We hope the parents of Montgomeryshire will see what a brilliant sport football is for girls and start their daughters on their football journey at your closest Huddle Centre which is at Dolyfelin playing fields in Welshpool delivered by TNS on Thursday’s 5.30pm-6.30pm during term time. Or if your interested in joining a local club contact girlsfootball@faw.cymru."
However the onus is now on the Welsh to qualify for a major tournament for the first time ever and Roberts insisted that dream could become a reality next month.
She said: "We know that qualification to a major tournament is the game changer for football in Wales, and we could make history in our final qualifier against Slovenia and secure a first play off spot for Cymru’s women and inspired thousands more girls across the country to play."
