The Pride flag will be flying from outside Newtown's council offices over the weekend, in a show of support for the first-ever Powys Pride event.
The flag will be raised from Friday, July 15, to Monday, July 18, to mark Powys’ first ever Pride event in Llandrindod Wells.
Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has two flag poles on the outside of Brisco House building at the corner of Broad Street and Severn Street.
The Mayor of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Cllr John Bryne, said: “It is wonderful to see that following a community request the town council is able to show support to the Powys Pride event in Llandrindod Wells this weekend.
“Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council is committed to values and principles of equality, respect and valuing diversity.
“Flags are symbols which give a visual message about the town and the council values to the local community and to the outside world, and flying the LGBTQ+ Rainbow flag demonstrates the commitment.”
The council has a Flag Flying Policy which outlines when and how the Council will fly flags from the two poles, usually the Welsh National Flag and the Union Flag.
The Town Council’s Flag Flying Policy invites requests from the community which are “consistent with the published values of the town council”.
Under the Community Request, flags can be flown to celebrate international, national and community wide events or causes which are non-denominational, charitable and not-for-profit.
Powys Pride is taking place this Saturday, July 16, in Llandrindod Wells, providing a family friendly day full of activities on The Green and an evening of celebrations at the Pavilion.
