LLANBISTER Show organisers have confirmed that the fur and feather competition at this weekend’s centenary event will now just be fur only due to extended DEFRA regulations in line with the avian flu epidemic.
Llanbister's 100th show takes place this Friday, June 3, after fears last year that a lack of interest could prevent the show from celebrating its centenary. Locals came together though to secure the show’s future, with show week kicking off with a horse fun run and car treasure hunt on Sunday, May 29.
Extended DEFRA regulations came into place following outbreaks of avian flu earlier this year, so the planned poultry and cage bird sections at the show have been cancelled. Organisers said: “We are disappointed but can assure everyone that a 'fur only' small animal competition will go ahead so you can still groom your gerbil or fettle your ferret.”
Following last weekend’s events, there will be a speed shearing contest, complete with barbecue and bar, on Thursday, June 2, at the village hall, culminating in the main show on Friday at Trawscoed, Llanbister (LD1 6TH). Entry is free for primary age children and £3 for everyone else.
Show day itself will stage a horse and pony show and jumping, dog and sheep shows, displays of bees, pygmy goats, Valais sheep, a choir, bouncy castle and other children’s activities, as well as trade, craft and community stalls, a refreshment tent and licensed bar, child and adult crafts (with a new category – best walking stick) and produce sections. Entries must be received between 12-1.30pm in the craft tent on show day.
The 2022 event also sees the return of the traditional adult art and photography competitions.
The art theme is ‘100 years and/or the Platinum Jubilee’ in any medium. Photography theme is ‘A Celebration’. Colour or black and white. See the programme for other important conditions.
Entries for both to be received as for craft and produce competitions above or delivered to a show officer in advance.
Further details can be found in the printed programme, which is now out and available in various locations as well as on the day, and viewable on the Llanbister Show Facebook page.
