Peter Compton, who ran the office at Newtown's railway station for more than 20 years, has been remembered as "loveable rogue" following his death.

People from California to Vietnam valued his help with cheaper rail fares and travel advice during his 22 years at the station until he retired in March 2016.

Touching tributes have been paid to the "irreplaceable" 75-year-old, who lived in Llandinam, who sadly died on February 14 following a short illness.

Peter's son Sam said: "A loveable rogue is best way to describe him. The life and soul of the party who never wanted people to fuss over him".

Born in the Birmingham area in 1946, Peter was a maths lecturer at Bristol University for several years before moving to Llandinam in 1974 where he was head gardener at Plas Dinam, the home of Lord and Lady Davies.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Peter had set up the railway office as a joint partnership before taking it on by himself.

“The station was a passion of his. He’s always been interested in railways ever since being a child," Sam said.

Peter also held an annual garden party at his house in Llandinam to raise money for Diabetes UK. "He did a lot of charity work and fundraising for them. He was not selfish at all."

“He had a global friend base and it’s all through his business and word of mouth that spread around the world. I was getting calls from California and Vietnam from people who became customers by word of mouth from other customers. They would say 'we’ve heard you’re really good, any chance you do this when we’re in the UK’. A couple from California came over to the garden party a few times. It’s a special thing."

Peter Compton has been running Newtown Station Travel and serving the people of the area selling rail tickets and giving travel advice for 22 years, today he retired. Newtown Silver Band even showed up to play a tune and thank him for his work.

Montgomeryshire's Welsh Parliament member Russell George paid tribute to Peter and his work helping the community.

"Peter was highly regarded and he was known to be very helpful and friendly. He was known for being able to obtain good value rail fares across the country. And he had extensive knowledge on the rail services and rail generally which people appreciated and when he left the station, I know that he was greatly missed and I’m very sad to hear of his passing."
