A group of Powys activists is joining a nine-day protest in London calling for an end to fossil fuel use.

Two dozen activists are travelling from Powys today (Friday, April 8) to participate in the protest organised by Extinction Rebellion.

The protest starts on Saturday, April 9, and will demand that the UK Government treat the topic of climate change more seriously and end new investments in fossil fuel subsidies.

David France, 25, a carer from Welshpool, said: “I’m appalled by the corrupt MPs pushing against policies that would help British people struggling with energy bills, like better insulation and onshore wind, in favour of fossil fuel expansion in the UK.

“Those fossil fuels would be extracted by corporations and sold at global prices, doing nothing to help British people, only the planet-wrecking energy giants who have the Government in their pocket.

“That’s why I’m joining Extinction Rebellion in London, to support the UN’s call for no new fossil fuel projects, before complete climate breakdown is unstoppable.”

The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report in February 2022, warning that governments across the world have “brief and rapidly closing” window to mitigate climate change”.

“But the truly dangerous radicals are the countries that are increasing the production of fossil fuels.

“Investing in new fossil fuels infrastructure is moral and economic madness."
