The A458 between Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion has reopened after a two-month closure.

The road was first closed in both directions on January 29 to replace a collapsed Spring Bank culvert.

It was originally scheduled to re-open on April 14, however that was moved to an earlier date following outcry from local residents, opening on March 29.

The reopening comes a day earlier than Traffic Wales previous announcement on when the closure would end.

Earlier this month they announced: “Despite some unforeseen challenges brought about with the recent storms, we will be removing the road closure on March 30, two weeks ahead of our original completion date.

“Works will continue onsite after this date under two-way temporary traffic lights.”

The closure and subsequent diversion caused frustration among Welshpool residents and businesses who felt the closure and diversion created a disruption to traffic and trade.

Welshpool Llanerchyddol Councillor Graham Breeze reportedly received numerous complaints from residents concerning the road closure.

Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams and MS Russel George each stated that measures should be taken to ensure the road could at least be partially open as soon as possible.

The closure came after two years of traffic lights being stationed on the A458, with the lack of activity in repairing the road to remove the lights already frustrating residents.

Traffic lights will remain in place while safety barriers are put in place.
