Roads in Welshpool town centre will close this weekend as the town's long-awaited 10k race is launched.
After several delays, the long-awaited Welshpool 10k is finally taking place this weekend amid a flurry of excitement.
The run, organised by Adrenaline Sporting Events, is ready to cross the start line after two years of delays as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Having first been announced in 2019, the run will take place this Sunday, March 27, beginning at 9am. Signs have been set up in Broad Street saying the road will be closed from 5am until 1pm, although that is likely to be the maximum possible closure period.
Alan Lewis, founder and owner of Adrenaline Sporting Events, said: “It almost doesn’t seem real, that it’s finally happening after such a long time.
“We’re all excited and emotional to finally be bringing this big event to Welshpool, with the town fully embracing it.”
The start and finish line for the 10k is on Broad Street, with the route taking runners on a one lap race that encompasses the grounds of Powis Castle.
The route includes Berriew Road, and Red Lane, with Powis Castle playing a central role in the course.
The route has reportedly been designed to be accessible for runners of all abilities, from first timers to experienced participants. The estimated movement time is about an hour.
The race is scheduled to be started by Paralympic gold medallist Jim Roberts, who scored 24 tries in the wheelchair rugby final in Tokyo last year.
The start and end of the race will take place on fully closed roads for the safety of runners and spectators.
Alan added: “Obviously we’re hoping to minimise the disruption to roads, but while the race is ongoing road closures need to be abided by for the safety of everyone involved.”
Adrenaline Sporting Events has stated that many roads will only be closed for a short period of time, with the race cut-off time being 90 minutes.
Race finishers will receive a unique medal in recognition of the event.
Alan also stated: “We are keen to ensure that everyone regardless of their ability enjoys the day, especially after such a long wait for it to finally arrive.”
