A Newtown landmark has been lit up in the colours of Ukraine’s flag following the Russian invasion.
St Mary’s Church, near the banks of the River Severn, joins world famous monuments and buildings such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Colosseum in Rome.
The church has been illuminated in blue and yellow in support for the people of Ukraine.
Newtown Mayor Cllr Richard Williams said: “After watching the horrific and unsettling events in Ukraine, I applied to the town council to light St Mary’s Church in the colours of the Ukrainian Flag, in order to show solidarity to the people of Ukraine that the residents and businesses of Newtown stands with the people of Ukraine against aggression and conflict.”
The act of solidarity by Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council joins many other acts organised throughout Wales in the wake of the invasion which began three weeks ago.
Many buildings across the country have followed a similar action, including many within Newtown itself.
