With fuel prices on the rise, drivers across Powys have been told the situation is likely to worsen.

Bradleys Costcutter, which has petrol forecourts in Newtown, Llanidloes and Caersws, said its stocks are running low quickly as demand is high as consumers are “aware things are only going to get worse”.

Petrol prices in the county have continued to rise as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine puts strain on the fuel industry.

On Wednesday, Bradleys Costcutter said: “We realise this is a very difficult time for everyone right now and we can assure you we are doing everything we can to keep the fuel price as low as possible.

“Unfortunately, we are having to react to the increases in fuel cost pretty much straight away.

“We receive our next day’s fuel costs every day and therefore we are seeing the impact immediately. Our stocks are running low quickly as demand is high, as consumers are aware things are only going to get worse.

“We believe the major supermarkets have a delay in their pricing and hence why they can hold their retail prices lower for longer. Normally this would not cause a major issue, or a large price difference between us and our competition, but with the cost price rising dramatically each day this is making it very difficult to remain competitive.

“I have read on social media posts that people believe Petrol Retailers are trying to profiteer out of the situation in Ukraine. This makes me feel anger and very sad. Within the petrol industry we do not work to percentage margins, but we work on pence per litre.

“I can assure you all that we are NOT profiteering and are currently working on extremely small margins. The simple reality is we cannot sell fuel at a loss."

They added: "We have decided as a company to individually price our sites on a delivery basis. Therefore, as soon as we have depleted old stock and a new delivery arrives this is when we will react.

"Caersws received their delivery today. Newtown receives a delivery tomorrow and Llanidloes on Friday.

"My advice to all our customers is remain topped up as this is only going to get worse."
