A POWYS man will spend the next month behind bars after he kicked a police van and stole a piece of shortbread from a bakery.
Shane Davies, 33, was jailed by magistrates sitting in Merthyr Tydfil last Friday, March 4, after he had failed to show up for a hearing in Llandrindod Wells earlier in the week. Davies admitted four offences in total, including criminal damage, theft, being drunk and disorderly and failing to attend court.
The four-week jail term was handed down to Davies, of Station Road, Rhayader, for damaging a Ford Transit van belonging to Dyfed Powys Police on February 9 in Llandrindod. Magistrates said he had failed to comply with the requirements of post-custodial sentence supervision and that the offence was aggravated by being committed while on bail as well as the defendant's previous record.
The theft occurred on the same day where Davies stole a piece of chocolate shortbread, valued at £2.55p, belonging to Greggs in Llandrindod.
Davies was handed an additional two week’s custody, but this will be served concurrently. He must pay a £128 surcharge while a further hearing is to be held at Llandrindod Magistrates’ Court on March 30 to consider a criminal behaviour order.
The drunk and disorderly incident occurred on January 28, also in Llandrindod. Davies admitted being drunk in the Waterloo Road area, near Tesco.
Magistrates ordered no separate penalty for this offence. A one-week prison term was handed down to Davies for failing to attend his original court date in Llandrindod last week – but this is to also be served concurrent.
