Street name suggestions for a new housing development in Newtown have been revealed.

Eighteen homes are currently being built on land where the former Red Dragon pub and Maesyrhandir Youth Centre once stood.

Powys County Council said is has received a request from the developer to name the streets as Red Dragon Close and Swift Court. The Welsh names would be Clos y Ddraig Goch and Cwrt y Wennol.

Eleven two-bed houses, three three-bed houses, two four-bed houses, one five-bed house and a three-bed bungalow are expected to be completed by May this year.

The development will be split into two where Red Dragon Close will be accessed off Plantation Lane and Swift Court will be accessed off Swallow Drive.

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council agreed to support the suggestions after it was asked by Powys County Council to consider the two street names.

Councillor Richard Edwards said: “I think both those names are suitable. They relate to something that used to be on the site, the pub, and also they keep the same ornithological name of the surrounding area, so swift and swallow.”

Costing £3.5m, the project is part of the council’s target of building 250 new homes by 2025.

Powys County Council said: “It is important we provide an efficient process to the developers in order for connections such as BT and the Utility Companies to connect each property. Once the process has been approved the Emergency Services are informed of the new addresses.”
